Most weeks of the month, most days of the week, most hours of the day, I rushed from one room to another every fifty-three minutes. I ate lunch with my friends. I partook in my usual extracurricular activities. I was the archetypal eighth-grade student.

For each of the one-hundred-and-eighty days of eighth-grade, I eagerly awaited Ms. Nudelman’s history class. My classmates and I collectively analyzed how events throughout history influenced modern-day society, piquing my curiosity for history. Prior to the 2016 primary election, Ms. Nudelman digressed from her lesson plan to explicitly lecture the political spectrum. Initially, like my twenty-four peers, I was oblivious to the significance of her lecture. I was both uninterested in the vehement stigma encompassing American politics and sheltered from the judgments of other people.

Ms. Nudelman encapsulated the largely uncharacteristically vile tone of the election arising during my lifetime, enticing me to begin watching the news on television, perusing the daily newspaper, and witnessing the 2016 election unfold. During my spare time, I scrutinized and developed an opinion on the heaps of American political issues — everything from term limits to healthcare. In my moment of newfound and steady inquiry of political topics, I, once indifferent to politics, morphed into someone who found an unfeigned appreciation towards politics.
