Victor’s Thoughts—Post #8: Normal People by Sally Rooney
Rarely do I finish a book in one sitting. Perhaps it is because I like taking breaks to clear up my mind or because I lose interest in a novel midway through. But Sally Rooney’s novel, “Normal People” was different—I finished the book in a single sitting. From the very first line, she hooked me in—the mere illustration of two high school students, Marianne and Connell at school, became instantly relatable. Readers can sense from the beginning of Rooney’s novel the unusual relationship dynamic between Connell and Marianne. For what appears like an ordinary messy relationship, through Connell and Marianne’s interactions, dialogue, and experience with the world around them, they reveal many aspects of class divides, socioeconomic statuses, gender dynamics, and the uniting force of love. As “Normal People” unfolds, it becomes clear that many of the divisions within our society become lost when two individuals find true affection with one another.
If you need a summer reading book, I highly recommend this novel. The writing is punchy and concise. The style is unique as it jumps through time and different points of view. And most importantly, the message is powerful and relevant during these unusual times.
